Asthma is a chronic
breathing ailment that has plagued mankind since time immemorial. This
condition is mainly characterized by wheezing, coughing, tightness in the chest
and the feeling of impending doom during episodes. Medical societies,
conventional and alternative, have tried to find ways and means of eliminating
asthma totally without success even with new breakthroughs and technology.
Asthma is incurable, at least for the time being.
But even without
success in the field of curing the ailment, there have been vast improvements
in terms of treatment and the effectiveness of the medications or concoctions
being formulated. Aside from using conventional and alternative medicine and
treatments there is also another option that is more concentrated on relieving
your flare-ups and episodes by using items that you would probably find lying
around the house; home remedies. Requiring only a few minutes and procedures,
you will find this technique very useful in times of emergencies where
immediate access to conventional or alternative rescue/relief medication is not
possible.
Here are possibly some
of the best home remedies that you can use to relieve yourself during attacks:
Coffee: Rich, dark, hot,
strong coffee; about two cups of it. Contrary to popular belief that coffee can
cause various disorders, it has recently been found that coffee doesn't only
give you that much needed boost of energy in the morning but also prevent
flare-ups and help to relieve asthma attacks. This is all thanks to
theophylline - a chemical present in coffee, which acts as a powerful
bronchodilator relaxing the constricted muscles in the lungs allowing the
airway to open more so that air can pass in and out freely.
Honey: Honey is also
one of the more popular asthma home remedies that you can count on during times
of crisis. Holding a jug of honey under the nose and inhaling the aroma that
rises from it can relieve or minimize asthma symptoms for an hour or so, while
waiting for further medical assistance to arrive. Taking a teaspoon of honey
during attacks can also act as an expectorant, breaking down the mucus that
clogs the lungs, making it easier to expel out of the body.
Steam: Steam has been
used to bring relief in many breathing related illnesses including asthma.
During attacks, run a hot shower (as hot as it can get) for about 3-5 minutes,
closing all the doors so that steam can build up inside the room. Walk into the
room and take deep breaths until the steam has completely dissipated. The steam
will help to open up your airways allowing for easier breathing; can last for
about an hour or longer depending on the severity of your attack.
Home remedies for
asthma, while effective should not be considered as a permanent option for
every attack as it can only help you to relieve yourself temporarily until you
get proper medical attention.
